These two are easily becoming one of my favourite author and illustrator combinations. My daughter loves it. Rio has been sent to live with his Grandma for 4 weeks in California whilst his mum goes into hospital (she is suffering with mental health issues.

Pleasant illustrations. A beautiful story with gorgeous illustrations which are actually rather dark but only serve to emphasise the sadness running throughout the book.

Very highly recommended Perfectly complimenting a perfectly written story. I really felt for Rio who was so worried about his mum but loved watching the relationship develop between him and his unconventional Grandmother Fran. Stunning illustrations by Levi Pinfold

Having previously read The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, and loving it, I was so excited to read The Lost Whale. The whales, particularly White Beak, are exactly what he needs, just as they were for his mum during her childhood, and is now how he feels close to his mum despite the distance between them. “Sometimes real life doesn’t go the way you want it to, but that doesn’t mean you just give up.

Rio hopes pictures of White Beak might restore his mums happiness. There’s a quote from the book that has really stuck with me. Equally I loved his journey of discovery and adventure to rescue White Beak.
When Rio first encounters White Beak, his entire life changes. It’s a story of change, growth, healing, friendship, marine ecology and lots more. As for the illustrations, Levi has truly outdone himself. Nice book.
