That is why I'm convinced it does not auto-park. This is because they don't support GPT partitions. That was during the very long 'badblocks' test with a fan blowing through the drive cage.

Formatting under XP is fine, you just don't want to let it create the partitions. 4 stars due to great support. I can't comment on Amazon's packing, because I bought it from a different site.

All of mine (so far) have come well padded in a sturdy cardboard box. Opinions vary but I'd say anything up to 45C is nothing to worry about. They facilitated the RMA process and I now have a new Toshiba 3TB hard drive.

This is a linux utility which is very similar to the familiar 'fdisk', except it is designed to work with GPT partitioning instead of traditional MBR. M. It was initially subjected to a burn-in period using the linux utility 'badblocks'.

This tool has an option to align your partitions on a 1MB boundary. Perhaps the negative reviewers could name and shame the companies selling the bad drives, to see if there is a pattern of bad drives being sent out again and again, and also if any particular company is not packaging correctly.

Don't use the partitioning that is built-in with WinXP, or the alignment will not be correct and performance will suffer. I'm glad for this, because I believe head parking should be left under control of the operating system, not arbitrarily forced by a drive's firmware. Since that time, up until a few days ago, it has been used as the parity drive for a SnapRAID array. 729TB when measured in proper base-2 units.
