The songs are never what they seem— this is a theme that appears throughout the entire book. To the Dragon's exasperation, the law of the land dictates he must educate her in the ways of magic. Naomi Novik weaves this theme throughout the story, through magic and politics, from growing up in a small town/village to leaving home for the first time, to entering life in a big city, and what it means to come back home into nature.

When an author can take an idea of a retelling (Beauty and the Beast) and really make the story their own it really gets me excited! The initial sound and feel of the novel lulls you into believing that this will be a classic epic fantasy, but Novik takes you on some unexpected places. She returns, emphatically insisting she has not been harmed.

Then the Dragon comes with is potions and his sorcery to cure those effected. It’s 435 pages. Not a beast but a man, he has lorded over Agnieszka's valley for more than a hundred years.

Julie Emelin read the book with a delicious Russian accent that only added to the affect. I once had a second hand copy in better condition than this.

Agnieszka can not imagine leaving her family and friends, her home. Uprooted definitely is one of those stories that, in my opinion was very surprising.
